Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD)

Prilyx Security Solution Case Study

Heydar Aliyev International Airport is one of six airports serving Azerbaijan, and handles approximately 1 million passengers a year. Spanning 700,000 square feet and located 15 miles north east of the capital Baku, the airport connects visitors to the city by way of a modern highway. It is the busiest airport in the Caucasus, and serves as the home base for flag carrier Azerbaijan Airlines and its subsidiary AZAL Jet, as well as for freight carrier Silk Way Airlines.

In preparation for the Baku 2015 First European Games being hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev International Airport anticipated a significant increase in traveler traffic. To address this, the administration aimed to implement significant improvements to the security and surveillance systems in place. While also updating security infrastructure to address the evolving security threat to civil aviation, the airport administration sought to further enhance the passenger experience. Heydar Aliyev International airport faced the following challenges:

  • Outdated security software and hardware
  • Disconnected passenger processing components
  • Fragmented and inefficient security operations
  • Manual passenger processing
  • Lengthy passenger wait times
  • Illegible manual stamping results
  • Overlapping customs and arrivals area

Prilyx assisted the government of Azerbaijan with updating the security infrastructure and enhancing the passenger experience. To address these issues, Prilyx implemented a biometrics and video solutions as well as installed the cameras and the gates to improve the accuracy of threat detection and to reduce the passenger wait times.

The solution paved the way for a more efficient security process to take place by automating operations and updating all relevant hardware. The centralization of surveillance functions allowed connectivity between multiple airports and the sharing of information and activity reports between them.

Prilyx also provided comprehensive training to security staff as well as airport IT personnel to enable effective troubleshooting. The video analytics expedited the gathering of actionable information, such as people counts and movement flow, to facilitate informed decision making and improved quality control.
